Real Madrid v Barcelona in trophies – which El Clasico rival has won more titles?
Real Madrid – in trophies
We start with Real Madrid, a club that has been a global footballing powerhouse for the best part of the last 60 years. Football icons such as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, Raúl, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have all pulled on the famous white shirt over the years, and they and many others have played a part in the club’s prominent history.
Los Blancos have won just about everything there is to win in the game, but exactly how many titles reside in the club’s bulging trophy cabinet?
Let’s begin at home in Spain. The domestic circuit has certainly been a happy hunting ground for Real over the years. Los Blancos have won a record 33 La Liga titles since the competition began in 1929 – including 2016/17’s title, their first in five years. Only nine clubs have ever won the domestic title in Spain, and only six of those sides have won it more than once, making Real’s tally even more impressive.
After the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey is the next most prestigious domestic title in Spain, and was effectively Spain’s national championship until the league championship began in the 1920s. Real Madrid have won the Copa del Rey 19 times since its inception in 1903, ranking Real third on the list, behind Barcelona (28) and Athletic Bilbao (23).
Despite their success in Spain, Real Madrid are perhaps most famous for their excellent European record, having been crowned continental champions no fewer than eleven times, with AC Milan next on the list with seven titles.
Not only have Real won more European titles than Barcelona, but they are the most successful club of all time. Los Blancos made it 12 European Cups / Champions Leagues in June after winning back-to-back titles against Juventus in Cardiff.
In addition, Real have won two UEFA Cups and three European Super Cups, as well as two Latin Cup triumphs. For those of you wondering, the Latin Cup was a tournament for the Latin European nations of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal that existed during the 1950s, prior to the introduction of UEFA’s European Cup.
Not only have Real conquered Europe over the years, but they have also extended their trophy haul on a global level, winning the Intercontinental Cup – contested by the European and South American champions – three times, and the Club World Cup – the current incarnation of the Intercontinental Cup – twic, in 2014 and most recently in December 2016.
Real have also won the Supercopa de España nine times, the Copa Eva Duarte on one occasion (the predecessor to the Supercopa de España), and the short-lived Copa de la Liga (which only ran for four years) also on one occasion.

FC Barcelona – in trophies
Now let’s look at the other half of the El Clásico rivalry: Barcelona. The Catalan club has become synonymous for beautiful football, with many of the game’s most iconic players having represented Barça during their careers, including Johan Cruyff, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi to name a few.
They have also enjoyed their fair share of success, and have won multiple titles in every major competition. Let’s dig a little deeper into their impressive list of honours…
After winning the inaugural La Liga title in 1929, Barcelona have since gone on to lift the trophy a further 23 times. That total puts them firmly as the second most successful side in the history of La Liga, but still eight titles adrift of bitter rivals Real.
The Catalan club may not be able to match the number of domestic titles notched by their fierce rivals but they do have the edge in recent years, winning eight titles to Real’s five since the turn of the millennium.
The Copa del Rey is a different story however. Barça have won Spain’s premier cup competition a record 28 times, and are the current holders after beating Sevilla 2-0 in last season’s final.
Much like Real Madrid, Barcelona have significant pedigree in Europe. While they have been unable to match Real’s record eleven triumphs, Barça have still been crowned European champions an impressive five times. This includes four titles in the last decade after defeating Arsenal in the final in 2006, Manchester United in 2009, the Red Devils again in 2011 and Juventus in 2015.
Elsewhere in European competition, Barça have also collected four Cup Winners Cups, five European Super Cups, three Fairs Cups and two Latin Cups. Barça have also enjoyed some global success, having won the Club World Cup on a record three occasions.
List of honours (as of 4/6/2017):

European Cup Winners’ Cup x 4
Inter-Cities Fairs Cup x 3

BARCELONA TOTAL TROPHIES: 92
TROPHIES TOTAL: REAL MADRID 87-92 BARCELONA
The numbers above show that Barcelona have the overall edge in terms of trophies won throughout their illustrious histories, albeit a very narrow one. However, Real Madrid fans can argue that they have the edge in perhaps the two biggest competitions, La Liga (33-24) and the European Cup (12-5).
