Real Madrid v Barcelona in trophies: Which club has won more titles?

Real Madrid Barcelona

When the footballing giants of Real Madrid and Barcelona face off it is perhaps the biggest rivalry in club football: El Clásico. Watched by millions of people all over the world the match is steeped in history, with politics, world-class players and passionate fans all playing their part in ensuring that their matches are more than a little bit spicy.

Aside from their rivalry between themselves, Real Madrid and Barcelona are two of the most successful clubs in the modern game, with numerous league and cup titles between the pair, both in their native Spain and across international borders.

But, which side has won more trophies throughout their respective histories? Let’s take a look at Real Madrid v Barcelona in trophies to find out which Spanish giant is the more successful…

Real Madrid v Barcelona in trophies – which El Clasico rival has won more titles?

Real Madrid – in trophies

We start with Real Madrid, a club that has been a global footballing powerhouse for the best part of the last 60 years. Football icons such as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, Raúl, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have all pulled on the famous white shirt over the years, and they and many others have played a part in the club’s prominent history.

Los Blancos have won just about everything there is to win in the game, but exactly how many titles reside in the club’s bulging trophy cabinet?

Let’s begin at home in Spain. The domestic circuit has certainly been a happy hunting ground for Real over the years. Los Blancos have won a record 33 La Liga titles since the competition began in 1929 – including 2016/17’s title, their first in five years. Only nine clubs have ever won the domestic title in Spain, and only six of those sides have won it more than once, making Real’s tally even more impressive.

After the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey is the next most prestigious domestic title in Spain, and was effectively Spain’s national championship until the league championship began in the 1920s. Real Madrid have won the Copa del Rey 19 times since its inception in 1903, ranking Real third on the list, behind Barcelona (28) and Athletic Bilbao (23).

Despite their success in Spain, Real Madrid are perhaps most famous for their excellent European record, having been crowned continental champions no fewer than eleven times, with AC Milan next on the list with seven titles.

Not only have Real won more European titles than Barcelona, but they are the most successful club of all time. Los Blancos made it 12 European Cups / Champions Leagues in June after winning back-to-back titles against Juventus in Cardiff.

In addition, Real have won two UEFA Cups and three European Super Cups, as well as two Latin Cup triumphs. For those of you wondering, the Latin Cup was a tournament for the Latin European nations of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal that existed during the 1950s, prior to the introduction of UEFA’s European Cup.

Not only have Real conquered Europe over the years, but they have also extended their trophy haul on a global level, winning the Intercontinental Cup – contested by the European and South American champions – three times, and the Club World Cup – the current incarnation of the Intercontinental Cup – twic, in 2014 and most recently in December 2016.

Real have also won the Supercopa de España nine times, the Copa Eva Duarte on one occasion (the predecessor to the Supercopa de España), and the short-lived Copa de la Liga (which only ran for four years) also on one occasion.

List of honours (as of 4/6/2017):

La Liga x 33
Copa del Rey x 19
UEFA European Cup/Champions League x 12
UEFA Cup x 2
UEFA Super Cup x 3
Intercontinental Cup x 3
FIFA Club World Cup x 2
Supercopa de España x 9
Copa Eva Duarte x 1
Latin Cup x 2
Copa de la Liga x 1

REAL MADRID TOTAL TROPHIES WON: 87

FC Barcelona – in trophies

Now let’s look at the other half of the El Clásico rivalry: Barcelona. The Catalan club has become synonymous for beautiful football, with many of the game’s most iconic players having represented Barça during their careers, including Johan Cruyff, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi to name a few.

They have also enjoyed their fair share of success, and have won multiple titles in every major competition. Let’s dig a little deeper into their impressive list of honours…

After winning the inaugural La Liga title in 1929, Barcelona have since gone on to lift the trophy a further 23 times. That total puts them firmly as the second most successful side in the history of La Liga, but still eight titles adrift of bitter rivals Real.

The Catalan club may not be able to match the number of domestic titles notched by their fierce rivals but they do have the edge in recent years, winning eight titles to Real’s five since the turn of the millennium.

The Copa del Rey is a different story however. Barça have won Spain’s premier cup competition a record 28 times, and are the current holders after beating Sevilla 2-0 in last season’s final.

Much like Real Madrid, Barcelona have significant pedigree in Europe. While they have been unable to match Real’s record eleven triumphs, Barça have still been crowned European champions an impressive five times. This includes four titles in the last decade after defeating Arsenal in the final in 2006, Manchester United in 2009, the Red Devils again in 2011 and Juventus in 2015.

Elsewhere in European competition, Barça have also collected four Cup Winners Cups, five European Super Cups, three Fairs Cups and two Latin Cups. Barça have also enjoyed some global success, having won the Club World Cup on a record three occasions.

List of honours (as of 4/6/2017):

La Liga x 24
Copa del Rey x 29
UEFA European Cup/Champions League x 5
European Cup Winners’ Cup x 4
Inter-Cities Fairs Cup x 3
FIFA Club World Cup x 3
UEFA Super Cup x 5
Supercopa de España x 12
Copa Eva Duarte x 3
Latin Cup x 2
Copa de la Liga x 2

BARCELONA TOTAL TROPHIES: 92

TROPHIES TOTAL: REAL MADRID 87-92 BARCELONA

The numbers above show that Barcelona have the overall edge in terms of trophies won throughout their illustrious histories, albeit a very narrow one. However, Real Madrid fans can argue that they have the edge in perhaps the two biggest competitions, La Liga (33-24) and the European Cup (12-5).

I won’t argue about the “quality” vs the “quantity” of these trophies…
    but let’s stick to numbers : 85 vs 91…
In 2017, Real madrid is going to add:
    + 1- la liga 2017
    + 2- UCL 2017
    + 3- UEFA supercup 2017
    + 4- Spanish supercup 2017
    + 5- Club world cup 2017…

    85 + 5 = 90 … 😉

Though I love how they play sometimes – their determination, energy and sharpness especialloy during these last two seasons I can still do without RM but I cannot just stop watching Barca. Whilst RM’s strife once with the ball on the pitch is to go and score, Barca are hardly too much in a hurry (like RM) to go for goals, but will always remember their fans and so will handle the ball with style that make the spectators/fans happy and, most of the time, still score. It’s not all about scoring goals but how they go about it so naturally and not with too much force and anxiety.

I think the just-concluded season was not for Barca. Sometimes it happens that way. The first signal was their loss to Alaves at Camp Nou (very much unexpected). Then their denied victory over R/Betis, their surprising defeat to Celta and their most unfortunete defeats to Depotivo and Malaga when it mattered most. Situation was against them in the season, but they still showed their worth. I think it was RM’s time in five years. That is football. Up Barca. Hope they carry Copa Del Rey and restructure well for the coming seasons. I will always wish them the very best.
Up Barca ! Up Barca !! Up Barca !!!

Am very Impress by Barca Teams world wide for the input they ‘re doing in all competition even though they were eliminated in 2016-17 from La Liga & Champions at the same time, we ‘re still leading the Trophies of Spain as whole with no doubt to Real Madrid fans with the total of 91+ 1 loading(Copa del Rey coming Sunday).

Real madrid are in a different league.
33 la liga Titles and 11 perhaps 12 european cups soon.
Barcelona 24 la liga titles and 5 european cups.
    How is there any comparison?
Real Madrid are by far the biggest club in the world.
Barcelona have won alot of insignificant trophies that never existed before.
By the way im an AC Milan fan. But lets get serious about the facts.
