Mike Maignan breaks Boca Juniors’ hearts with a heroic performance during the penalty shootout of the Al Kass International Cup 2013 semi finals in Qatar.
After a 1-1 draw in a tense affair between two of the best teams this 12-team Under-18 tournament has had to offer, Paris Saint-Germain’s 17-year-old keeper saved three penalties in a dramatic penalty shootout as well as scoring his own spot kick, helping holders PSG reach the final for a second successive season, where they will meet Fluminense.
PSG midfielder Franck Bambock gave the Parisians the lead in the 62nd minute but a red card for Kingsley Coman, one of the tournament’s star performers, gave Boca the momentum they often lacked in the first 60 minutes.
With six minutes remaining Krieger Santiago equalised for Boca, but Maignan was exceptional during the shootout making some outsanding one-handed saves to leave the Argentine giants in tears.
The final takes place on Thursday.
