The new Real Madrid home kit for the 2012-13 season displays a creative combination of the past, the present and the future. This season, the club will be commemorating its 110 years of existence, since it was set up on the 6th March 1902 as Madrid Football Club. Adidas have drawn upon the alpha Spanish club’s illustrious history and tradition and benchmarked this for future success. The question is, after a poor start to the season, will they be able to finish the season as champions proudly donning this shirt?
Adidas have blessed arguably the world’s most famous white club shirt this season with dark blue sleeve hems and a dark blue V-neck collar, all having a light-blue edge compared to last year’s kit which had a gold trim. The body of the shirt has subtle shiny white vertical pinstripes. The kit has a somewhat retro appearance with its elegant v-neck design. The shirt has a commemorative 110 year badge on the sleeve in gold, a colour affiliated with the huge success that Real Madrid has experienced since its inception. Betting company Bwin continue to sponsor the Spanish giants.
Adidas have done a fine job of this kit. I love the subtle contrasts between the dark blue and the light blue. However, I actually prefer last season’s home kit. The gold trim, in my opinion, would have been more relevant on this season’s kit and definitely would have complemented the 110 year commemorative badge. I am also wondering what could have been achieved if Adidas used purple instead of the blue as purple is more of a traditional colour for Real Madrid. At the end of the day, it is a smart, tasteful effort and befitting of a club with such a rich history of success.
I would give this kit a 7.2/10.
