They have arguably been one of the most marketable and global football clubs over the last two decades, and so it is fitting that the new Manchester United home kit for the 2012/13 season focuses implicitly on the local heritage of the South West Manchester giants. Nike, who have been making Manchester United‘s kits since the 2002-2003 season have branded their home creation as “Made of Manchester”, celebrating the gingham print which runs through the shirt.
Gingham print is a world-famous fabric that launched Manchester’s journey from a market town to one of the leading worldwide centres of cotton textiles. This growth is arguably similar to the growth that United have had since their inception in 1878 as Newton Heath until today’s date.
“Made of Manchester” consists of the red and dark red gingham check pattern throughout the shirt. The shirt has a black v-neck. There is no trim anywhere else on the shirt at all, it is as if Nike have done this deliberately to emphasise the importance of the design. AON continue to sponsor the shirt. The inscription on the inside of the collar “Forged in Industry, Striving for Glory” serves as a reminder of Manchester United’s journey of graft, endeavour and humble beginnings to their current status of one of the biggest clubs in the world defined by success and glory.
Many Manchester United fans dislike the new Manchester United home kit, describing it akin to Rupert the Bear or a tin of shortbread. I personally think the design is fantastic because it meaningfully reflects on an important part of Manchester’s tradition and history. Many people feel that Manchester United have been an institution that have famously detached itself from Manchester as a city since their successes domestically and in Europe have touched so many corners of the globe.
Many also feel that United’s counterparts and current Premiership Champions Manchester City have played more of an active role representing the city of Manchester as well. Nike have changed this perception by bringing to the world a new design that has firmly established an identity of commitment to the history and identity of Manchester. I take my flat cap off to them!
I would give this kit an 8.1/10.
