The Weekend Six Pack

Each week our betting columnist Rob Hartnett will bring you six bets from the weekend football action.  Rob is the public face of leading In Play betting specialists 188BET.com and appears regularly on the Bolton, Wigan, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Everton websites doing betting previews.  You can follow his thoughts on Twitter @HartnettRob

Last weekend was a rock and roll weekend for In Play betting.  No fewer than ten of the 36 games in the English Football League were won by sides who came from behind to grab wins while West Brom were 10.0 to draw after 6 minutes of their game against Man United, Newcastle were the same odds after 70 minutes against Wigan at home, Man City were 2.75 to beat Blackpool after 65 minutes, having been 1.60 at kick off, Arsenal could have been backed at 2.25 having been 1.30 against Birmingham at home on Saturday and Ivan Klasnic will have been toasted by Bolton backers who grabbed 10.0 about a late winner at the Reebok.  He was on the field for twelve minutes, scored the winner, picked up two yellow cards and a red.  Now that is what you could call having an impact.

Our bets were ahead after the weekend with Aston Villa and Juventus producing winners while Man City and Valencia both landed on the handicap meaning we got our stake back.  Samba’s sending off for Blackburn changed the nature of that game but we were back on twitter during the week with QPR being short of goals at Swansea on Tuesday, CSKA Moscow bagging three at Palermo on Thursday and Liverpool and Napoli sharing the spoils at odds of 3.30.

This weekend we look at England, Germany and Spain for our six bets, all of which are as ever available at odds against.

Wigan Vs Bolton 0 or 1 goals at odds of 2.70

The last three games between Wigan and Bolton at the DW Stadium have yielded a single goal.  You might argue that both sides are now playing better but looking on the start to this season compared to last the Latics have the same 9 points from 8 games while Bolton have scored one more than this time than last season and conceded one less.  There is a greater confidence though after recent good results and neither side will want to let that slip with defeat to local rivals.  It could make for another tight game and one goal or less at odds of 2.70 could be the best call.

West Ham Vs Newcastle +2.5 goals at 2.02

West Ham against Newcastle promises to be a real goal feast in the Saturday evening game.  Each of the last five meetings between this pair have produced exactly four goals, and 11 of the last 13 have seen at least three.  Add in to the mix that Newcastle have conceded at least two goals seven times already this season, the one time they didn’t they scored six, and the fact that West Ham have been saved by the woodwork on nine occasions already and you will see that odds of better than even money against three or more or even 2.85 about four or more make a fair bit of appeal.

Chelsea to win 2-0, 3-0 or 4-0 at combined odds of 2.25

Chelsea have won all four games with Wolves since they returned to the top flight, scoring no less than 16 goals.  The Blues have won 14 of the last 15 home games and have not conceded a goal at home for nearly 700 minutes.  To make matters worse for Wolves they lost every game against the current top four last season scoring one goal but leaking 19.  To be fair they have only lost by four goals once in the two full seasons in the top flight, albeit that was in this fixture last season.  One way to bet on the game could be to take that in mind and combine a Chelsea win by 2-0 or 3-0 at odds of 3.25, or add 4-0 into the mix for odds of 2.25.

Villarreal to beat Atletico Madrid at odds of 2.35

Villareal are flying high in Spain this season but it is nothing new and the key to their success down the years has been a formidable home record.  The only side they have failed to beat in their last 13 competitive games at the Madrigal is Barcelona and 2.35 is a very fair price against an Atletico side who save their own best performances for home having won only two and drawn four of 14 away games in the Primera Liga in 2010.

Borrusia Dortmund (-0.5/1) vs Hoffenheim at odds of 2.02

Dortmund’s blazing form in the Bundesliga continues and we will not desert them yet.  A draw with Paris St Germain in the Europa league is of little concern as they bounced back from defeat to Sevilla a couple of weeks ago to beat Bayern Munich 2-0 the following weekend.  They have now won seven games in a row in the domestic League, including three at home by an aggregate of 9-0.  Hoffenheim are no pushovers but they did ship four away to surprise packets Mainz in their last away game and can be overpowered by Dortmund.  This is a ‘Quarter Ball’ Asian Handicap which means we win to our full stake if Dortmund win by two goals, and we win to half our stake with half our stake back if they win by just one.

Man City to beat Arsenal @ 2.50

Man City may not have got Wayne Rooney this week but they will look to go further clear of their Manchester rivals by beating Arsenal.  The Gunners have only won one of their last eight away matches and have lost four of their last five away games at Man City.  The problems are clearly at the back and this is only the third season in 20 years that they have conceded double figures in the first eight games.  Carlos Tevez. remains the danger man for City with a massive 28 goals in his last 31 Premier League games and even Adebayor, who looked very out of sorts at Blackpool scored a hat trick in Europe on Thursday night.  City are a very fair price at 2.50 to take all three points and if you want even more take a look at the way they started slowly against Blackpool last week and go for a draw at half time and a City win at odds of 5.0 or 4/1.

producing winners while Man City and Valencia both landed on the handicap meaning we got our stake back.

  1. Nice stuff as usual Rob. I’m annoyed I didn’t get on the Villarreal tip as I was sure they’d win that and it was decent odds – not having internet at my flat is really getting quite annoying!

Did you know you’re top of the Just Football Fantasy League at present by the way?! :)
