Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko should be Spurs’ 1st Choice Strikers – Poll Results

Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko should be Spurs’ 1st Choice Strikers – Poll Results

At the end of February, in the midst of a growing campaign from Tottenham Hotspur supporters for Roman Pavlyuchenko to get his chance in the first team, we asked who you thought should be Spurs’ first choice strikers. Here were the results:

1, Roman Pavlyuchenko (50% of the vote)
2, Jermain Defoe (38%)
3, Eidur Gudjohnsen (5%)
4, Robbie Keane (4%)
5, Peter Crouch (3%)

As you can see, Pavlyuchenko and Defoe ran away with the vote, while poor old Peter Crouch only received a mere handful of votes, down at the bottom below even the exiled Robbie Keane.

In terms of the timing of the poll, just after Pavlyuchenko’s two goals against Wigan Athletic, you could argue the Russian striker’s performance at the JJB Stadium and the euphoria surrounding it perhaps influenced Spurs fans as votes poured in for the 28-year-old. I’m surprised to see him ahead of even Jermain Defoe, Tottenham’s top scorer this season. Then again, Pavlyuchenko is arguably the more technically gifted of the two.

But to see Crouch finish bottom of the poll is quite a contentious one. Has he really been performing that badly in the eyes of Tottenham supporters? I suspect the change in style of play adopted by coach Harry Redknapp (or by the players themselves) whenever Crouch is in the team may have had an influence here, as well as a recent dip in form for his club. It’d be interesting to see how opinions would have changed, if at all, after Crouch’s two goals for England against Egypt last week.

  1. Absolutely ridiculous

'Arguably the most technically gifted' – a pretty sh*t argument maybe

To be considered technically gifted you have to have a first touch – which Pav doesn't

    Average player

Crouch is better. Defoe is miles better

  2. I'm guessing you're not too familiar with the phrase 'arguably' then…

  3. He's not too familiar with spotting good players either.

  4. ….well. For me, Pav is better than Defoe and Crouch. He is just a bit wierd and unorthadox… Defoe is finally proving himself as a Premiership quality striker – with this season’s tally of goals (he should have done it by now, but better late than never). However, Pav has proved it already for Russia and in Russia.

  5. Pavlyuchenko and Gudjohnsen as first choice, then Defoe, then Crouch.
Crouch/Defoe too predictable and not the Spurs way (hoof).

  6. Pavlyuchenko is quite clearly the best striker at Spurs, if he was given his chance earlier we would have 4th locked up right now…defoe is a good striker…eidur is a good squad player…keane and crouch are absolutely useless…it’s too bad redknapp will continue to play crouch b/c he likes him on a personal level.

  7. Pav has got lucky. worst player on the pitch v blackburn but comes away with the headlines. hes got a bad touch, he cant hold up the ball, he isnt good under a high ball and he doesnt throw his weight around. crouch is miles better and will always be first choice as he contributes far more than pav does in open play. pav could never have played that ball through to gudjohnsen v stoke. Obviously, defoe is first choice too, goes without saying

  8. The poll speaks the truth. Simples… As super pav would say.

  9. Jermaine Defoe then daylight…..I think you will find that Harry agrees.

  10. Pav and Defoe should be automatic first choice, Gudjohnson good squad player or to change a game, Keane cover for Defoe, and Couch as back up.

  11. I think one of the modern mysteries of football is Crouch’s incredible scoring record for England. Even in a brief cameo appearance vs Egypt, after some off form for Spurs, he ran the show.

    Bizarre.

  12. There are a few factors as to why Pav. is Spurs best striker.
    1) International level:-Pav. has scored more goals than any other Spurs striker
2)Although he has not had many games, for the amount of play’ing time spent on the field he has scored more goals than any other Spurs striker.
3}Defoe is a good striker but very, very selfish .I do not care who scores,as long as Spurs win. So many times Defoe takes a half chance while other players are in a far better position to score.
Pav. is Spurs number 1 striker !!!

  13. we should play Pav upfront on his own – Modders behind – Bale and Lennon either flank – Wilson and Hudders holding………..Lets play a different stlye when against top 3 oe we`ll get beat using Harrys 4-4-2 that doesn`t work when playing the big boys?

    • Where does Jermain Defoe fit into that system, or are you advocating dropping a player who has bagged in 20-odd goals this season?
