Algeria 0-4 Egypt: Sweet Revenge / How To Lose The Plot Completely
Algeria 0-4 Egypt
African Cup of Nations semi final
Goals: Hosni 38′, Zidan 65′, Abdelshafi 80′, Gedo 90′
- Sun Tzu, The Art of War
Sometimes football can throw up the most appropriate of metaphors. A red rag to a bull almost couldn’t describe Egypt’s 4-0 thrashing of Algeria any better, from the suave matador-like performance of the holders to the mad angry rage of the Algerians. And, as if to hammer home the point, Egypt played in red. The bull ring parallels here are perfect.
The build-up to this semi-final, it seems, clearly got to Algeria’s players. In fact they played as if they had bought every single Egyptian newspaper in the 10 weeks between their 1-0 World Cup playoff victory in Sudan and this game and just got angrier and angrier at all the backchat and sniping and dismissing of their success. “We have proved that we deserve to be at the World Cup,” Madjid Bougherra stated after Algeria’s triumphant 3-2 quarter final victory over Cote d’Ivoire, and the burning fire in his eyes seemed to suggest this was a coded, defiant response to the boasts of their great rivals Egypt, who had claimed the Desert Foxes didn’t deserve a place in South Africa.
“For us it [the African Cup of Nations semi-final] is a chance to show the world that we deserve to go to the World Cup,” argued Egypt striker Mohamed Zidan before the match and all this talk about Algeria’s right to go to South Africa, in the aftermath of this stunning result, appears to have contributed to Algeria’s complete loss of control.
After some tense pre-match moments in which Egypt’s national anthem was booed, the players could barely overcome their mutual distaste for one another long enough to carry out the customary handshakes. Instead eyes averted and hands merely brushed. The tone was set.
Don’t push me cos I’m close to the edge
Egypt began on top, passing the ball around in their usual composed manner. Algeria seemed nervous, rattled, as if desperate – too desperate – to prove a point. They snapped at challenges and made snide little digs off the ball. Their concentration was all over the place. Egypt’s intricate passing, one-touch movement and smart interplay is on a different level to anyone else in Africa and it marked a stark contrast with Algeria’s apparent absence of cool.
Before long the goals came. Rafik Halliche made not one but two mistakes in the same move, slicing the ball to effectively put Emad Moteab clean through and then racing back to take him out in the box. Having already been booked, he walked in the 37th minute. Hosni Abd Rabou slid the penalty home and Algeria were 1-0 and a man down. Goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi then absolutely lost it, running over to referee Codjia Koffi to argue and virtually headbutting the official. In not showing what probably should have been a straight red card Koffi showed incredible restraint and personal dignity – a more egocentric referee would almost certainly have waved a red there and then. Half time 1-0 to Egypt, more on Chaouchi later.
In the second half Algeria coach Rabah Saadane reverted to an open 3-4-2 formation but while bold in thinking it left the Desert Foxes too exposed, particularly in wide areas. Egypt simply played around it.
A 2nd goal was coming, and it arrived in the 65th minute. Mohamed Zidan found space inside the penalty area, twisted and weaved and buried a left foot shot high into the top corner. 2-0 Egypt.
I’m trying not to lose my head
In the 69th minute the angry pot that had been simmering for well over an hour came to the boil. Nadir Belhadj, who had been terrorised all night by the excellent wing back Ahmed Al-Muhammadi, sought revenge in the most cowardly and despicable of ways. An absolutely reckless two-footed challenge brought a straight red card. It could easily have brought assault charges – Belhadj flew in to the tackle with no attempt to win the ball, clearly aiming at Al-Muhammadi’s standing leg. Disgusting. Fortunately the ENPPI defender was okay to continue. Egypt’s passing and rhythm seemed to be taken as an insult throughout the game by Algeria, who in turn sought strong-arm retribution. It didn’t work.
The stars of the show on the night were Egypt’s wing backs Al-Muhammadi and Sayed Moawad. They have too much for the entire continent, let alone Algeria and again flew up and down the wings tirelessly, stretching the play and providing cutting edge. Mohamed Zidan was also superb.
In the 80th minute Mohamed Abdelshafi put the finishing touches to a nice move, making it 3-0, and a dishevelled Algeria just fell apart. 7 minutes later Chaouchi went for a 50-50 with Mohamed Gedo, a
nother star of Egypt’s tournament, and decide to treat the Egyptian’s knee like a football at a goal kick, absolutely belting him one on the kneecap. The referee called Chaouchi over and Algeria were down to 8 men. In a 6 vs 3 counter-attack late on, Gedo then made it 4-0. As statements of power go, this was emphatic.
And from here?
On the evidence of this semi-final, Algeria will need to be far more disciplined in South Africa. Maybe the history between the two teams and all the animosity left over from the playoff game got to them. Maybe that’s understandable. Either way, if the Desert Foxes are to do themselves justice at the World Cup they will need to keep calm in pressure situations. In Benguela they simply melted under pressure. Fabio Capello’s scouts will have been watching on intrigued.
As for Egypt, they now advance to the African Cup of Nations final for the 3rd time running. It is now over 6 years since the Pharaohs lost a game in this tournament. “We planned well on how to handle each adversary since the start of the competition,” said Egypt assistant coach Shawky Gharib after the game. “We knew Algeria would be a strong team and still respect them. Now Ghana is one of the strongest teams and that’s the team we are going to face in the final, but we respect every team we face.”
Can Ghana’s young side end Egypt’s long spell of dominance on the continent in Sunday’s final? We’ll soon find out. But on the evidence of this formidable display, until proven otherwise, Egypt remain Africa’s finest.
African Cup of Nations 2010, Algeria, Egypt

What an excellent article to accompany an excellent show of world class football.
At the heart of game you are.
An article and a comment written by Egyptians. If they are English, sorry for them.
Egypt is long known for their corrupt regime.Corruption is a way of life, do not forget this is the first time they beat Algeria outside Cairo thanks to a surely corrupted low rank , referee. if you called last night a football match, i feel sorry for , you , we all know where CAF resides for so long and how corrupt they all are, last night was a disgrace to African football and that is why Egypt will only be Kings of Africa , because they cannot use their vicious and corruptive methods outside of Africa.
Ha! I'm about as Egyptian as French toast!
The referee had a very good game – if it was about corruption he would have sent Chaouchi off for the headbutt and Algeria would have had 9 men after 38 minutes. The ref actually showed great restraint in only showing him a yellow.
And you can hardly call it corrupt to send off Belhadj? One of the most vicious tackles I've seen in a long time.
Jonathan
I suggest Mr. anonymous (11:24) that you should call for your Algerian team to play football fairly, and not to confuse it with kickboxing, instead of blaming the referee!
Dude, if it was about corruption, we would have won that play-off in sudan…as Jonathan said the goal keeper would have been sent off much earlier.. there was about 2/3 offside decisions aganist Egypt which the replay showed they were incorrect…the ref was totally fair..and its expected that any losers will come with these usual excuse…but you can come with all excuses you want for the loss…but what is the excuse for this dirty game your team played?…i would be ashamed if that was my national team…and they certainly let there people down instead of showing fighting spirit and playing for the final….Mali made it 4-4 from 4-0 in 10 minutes..this is the difference…the world had to see the reality..i was certainly happy about the 3 red cards more than the 4 goals we scored coz this just shows how Algerians play football.
Just a comment on the passing and show-off Egypt did in the second half as an insult to the Algerians…i dedicate it to Mali…whoever seen the Angola v Algeria game will know what i mean…then we can talk about corruption!!!
by the way Egypt's third goal came after some 40 passes without the Algerians being able to touch the ball for about 3 min
What a great game and great 4 goals. I wish the Algerians will accept defeat instead of accusing the referee with corruption.
Get ready Algeria for the world cup you won't go anywhere with such poor performance
Algeria has a good team and we'll be in the world cup, they proved they are a strong team whether yu like it or not and yes the referee was impartial, very harsh, he shouldn't have given Halliche a yellow card then sending him off…Even the penalty should've been done again, well i guess this is football in Africa, anyway we re proud of our team and for our egyptian, i dont think Egypt went far in the last world cup so beat it and have some respect for a great team like Algeria, we came back after a long abscence, doing really well and your comments wont change a thing.
Cheers
Our players might have lost it but Egypt won against 8 players. They shouldn't be as proud of their national team. You might have won one game but we're going to South Africa. No matter what, Egyptians attacked our national team in Cairo, and egyptian channels turned it into a war.Our channels did not do that. The world saw what your PEOPLE did to our NATIONAL TEAM, it's more disgraceful that what players do to other players on the field. You should also consider the fact that egyptians (including memebers of the egyptian bars) were disrepectful towards our National Emblem. We did lose just like all the teams do even Egypt. That's what we call Sports: winning and losing
PS: Belhadj shouldn't have done what he did, Chawchi should be punished but Halliche did not deserve the first yellow card and 1 2 3 Viva l'Algerie
Until that game I – not Egyptian – had my doubts about all that allegations raised by Egypt of brutal foul play by the Algerian team, although one of their players was wanted by international warrant for a very long time for gauging the eye of an Egyptian doctor.
However, now Algeria went too far. You cannot fool the world in front of running camera. Such a disgraceful show of lack of fairness and total absence of sportsmanship has rarely been seen ever. Kudos to the referee who did not back down in the face of violence.
What had happened in Cairo was not acceptable either, however, that did not happen on the field and was not done by the players.
So when Egypt wiped the floor with her, Algeria got what she deserved. She had it coming since a long time. Egypt has truly spoken in the Pharaonic way, dishing out a most crushing defeat. Congratulations to a great team!
Let's hope that the Algerian players will grow up and do not embarrass themselves at the World Cup. Hate is a bad advisor as was brilliantly proven in Benguela.
Ridiculously, the referee from this game has been suspended indefinitely by CAF for failing to send off Chaouchi.
Just when you thought common sense prevailed…
Jonathan
CAF has lost it anyway – punishing the Togolese team after their tragic loss is so surreal one can only wonder what is going on in the brains of the officials – if they have one. A heart for sure they don't have.
Whatever u say, Anonymous, our team was stoned in Cairo, players were injured, it's a habit in Egypt to intimidate other teams….We don't care less about your opinion, this is a game and we won before, we 're qualified whether you like it or not, we deserved it, we have a young team, we believe in them, as if Egypt went far in WC,we beat West Germany in 1982, we have big names in soccer, not Egypt, why would they embarrass themselves, this is a game, this isn't about embarrassing…We also wiped the floor with Egypt twice this years…so please don't talk about something you don't know, they were only 8 in the field…the referee was so harsh and mean, shouldn't have sent off Halliche, he did it on purpose,he has a long history with his wrong decision, this isn't a referee, referees in WC are different, they talk, you know what i mean, that's a good excuse for you to insult Algerian, respect yourself so others will respect you, Go Algeria, we're with you whether you win or you loose, we believe in you and we know that you'll grow to be stronger.
Firstly,I am not an Egyptian, the referee was anything but mean! in fact as jonathan mentioned previously that he got suspended for not sending chaouchi out in the first place! it was a fair game. Congratulations to Algerians for being qualified to the World Cup and to Egyptians for getting an actual cup for the 7th time and the 3rd time consectuviely.. I must say Algerians are back in the game after a long absence but ethics are mandatory in football. and if there were only 8 players in the field Its not the Egyptians fault that Algerians merge football and boxing together.. you must understand the fact that Egyptians have better experience and happen to have a good luck.. Congratulations to Egypt and good luck to Algerians in the World Cup..
Diana..
Algerians are bad sportsmen, this was evident throught the Egypt vs Algeria game. and to blame the ref is just so sad! Algerians have no morals and i guess they showed the world that and also uncovered all their lies. Congratulations Egypt! very deserving of not only THRASHING AND DEMOLISHING algeria but being the BEST team in Africa and winning the african cup 3 times in a row!
Algerians will get nowhere in the world cup
and fyi im not egyptian either
Grow Up algeria
tina
You grow up, we don't care about your opinion, we always had professional players, check soccer history before you talk about your masters, we went far before, we have a young team, they learn from their mistakes, the ref souldn't have sent Halliche off, the first card wasn't deserved, the others yes, Egypt won, congratulations, this is a game, A GAME, we're not gonna hate our egyptian brothers for that, you loose or you win,and one more thing what happened in Cairo was filmed by canal + and everybody have seen it…..they'll do their best in world cup,the most important is that they qualified for SA, isn't it? i think some people should not talk about soccer when they don't know much about it, it's much better for them, so they won't be redeculous ,don't you get it people AS IF EGYPT WENT FAR IN THE WC< AT LEAST WE BEAT WEST GERMANY , Anyway, Congratulations Egypt, Go Algeria for WC
Cheers ,
we wonder Tina who's bad sportsmen , did you forget that Algeria bus was stoned in Cairo and players got hurt, the game should've been canceled, then the media kept insulting Algeria and it's people and so on, it was like a war for them, they didn't even accept their defeat??? Anyway, I'm gonna add anything else, we don't have to, reality is there, we lost this time, we came from a long absence, we're doing well, had a great game with Cote d'Ivoire, we beat Egypt and qualified for SA, it's a young team with a great future, they 'll have more experience within time, and go Algeria, you can check up the famous Algerian players…. You'll loose your mind,m have you heard about a famous Egyptian player in the world wide, nope,
So long
Hey Mak, we love our brothers from Mali, i have plenty of friends from Mali mate in Algeria and in France so beat it, they don't need you talking on their behalf, go algeria Gooooooooo, an excellent game with cote d'ivoire, our brothers, best one in the CAN
OMG how can somebody close both eyes and stubbornly deny the kickboxing attacks by the Algerian players? How can one deny the head butting of the referee by Chaouchi? All red cards were more than justified and it was Egypt's superior play that forced Algeria into frustration and violence.
Yes their bus was stoned in Cairo. So what? Egyptians were beaten up by Algerians before whenever the teams met. Egyptian players were poisoned in Algeria. An Algerian even gauged an eye of an Egyptian. So do not make a fuzz about the Cairo incident. It was wrong to stone the bus, but just the answer to Algerian violence This was not done by Egyptian players, but Algerian players love it brutal as now knows the world at large.
Anyway good luck at the WC (you are going to need it) because South Africa is the only thing that is left to you.
Its easy to draw conclusions from the match without zeroing in on the refereeing decisions. On closer inspection, Hosny's 2 footed challenge against Meghni in the 2nd minute did not so much as get a yellow card and that set the standard. Meghni was physically thrown to the ground, tripped from behind – no cards, eventually Codjia (the man has a dreadful track record ask Tunisians) gave a yellow to Fathallah for pulling on Matmour's shirt. He may have been the last defender, but he had DEFINATELY done it more than once by the time he got booked. Egypt constantly got the benefit of the doubt, eventually it got all too much for an Algerian team with an average age of 24. The Algerians will learn and improve, but not in an African competition, for some reason, they do better with FIFA referees – nothing to do with the Confederation of African Football being based in Cairo.
First reports from President of the Confederation of African Football Issa Hayatou said the refereeing was 'filled with mistakes', 'scandalous' and 'affected the outcome of the game'. Codjia's inevitable suspension was later put down to the Chaouchi incident – post Cairo / Misnistry of Information spin machine.
Algeria earned their place in South Africa and though they have been inconsistent at times, the trend has been positive. Time will tell. And to the Egyptian above, thanks – we always need a bit of luck. I hear the WC will be available on playstation soon, so give me the address of Hadary and co, and I'll send them a copy. I hear its ALMOST like being there : ) See you in 2014. Maybe.
With regard to the comments 'the whole world has seen Algerian violence'… everyone in Africa and the Middle East knows Egypt provokes players before and during matches. There are a long list of complaints by African countries. The problem here is that African Football is run out of Egypt. Why is it Egypt never qualifies for the WC? Oh and Coffi Codjia allowed a goal that blatantly wasn't a goal in the Egypt Cameroon game. Egypt got the same ref for quarter and semi finals. And they love the guy even though he has a controversial track record. Turkey refused to allow him to referee in 2002 WC. We will see how Egypt plays when the FIFA referees come into play.
To the people complaining about Koffi Codjia's bias – could you please explain to me, if he was biased towards Egypt, why didn't he send off Chaouchi for the headbutt?
I'm really struggling to understand that one.
Jonathan.
Everybody in Africa knows that Algerian (not the Egyptians) players are insulting and provoking. I am no Egyptian btw.
As for the referee it is just ridiculous picking on Koffi Codjia. What about the penalty and last-minute goal that were denied to Ivory Coast when they played Algeria? Ivory Coast did not run in circles and whined about it as the Algerians are doing.
We all watched the Algerian foul play, Koffi could easily have awarded at least one more penalty and sent another two of them packing. I think he felt pity
Oh my Godness! this line cracked me up!
Let me quote that anonymous: have you heard about a famous Egyptian player in the world wide, nope!!!
Seriously, I cracked up.. Haven't you heard about Mohammed Zidan? Amr Zaki? Mido? etc…
Algeria is stronger now i cant deny after a long absence! but never deny the egyptian power! if we are not strong enough then explain why we won African Cup 3 times in a row. On the contrary, this event has never ever happened in any other conitnent..
I recommend that you should read more about soccer and speaking of Egyptian violence that made my laugh like there is no tomorrow, explain sending civil air planes to Sudan? and Algerians with knives all over the stadium? so this is how you cheer for your team?
And YES I totally agree with Jonathan how could you say that Codja was biased towards Egypt when he did not send Chaouchi out from the first time?
Soccer is about winning and losing! you won being qualified to the World Cup but we won the African Cup!
Well, the French channels diffused a REPORTAGE about the Algeria vs Egypt game,The Egyptian goal keeper struck Halliche and the ref gave Halliche the yellow card, he then gave egypt a debatable penalty, one minute after he decided to send off Halliche, what a joke, the penalty wasn't done properly as the player stopped before shooting, Chaouchi did a terrible mistake, he should ve been sent off but the ref didn't cause he knew that he wasn't fair in his decisions!!! he sent him off at the end of the game for an imaginary fault, you can watch the game again and tell, Belhadj deserved his red card, the ref played blind when it comes to Egyptians committing faults on Algerian player, the specialists are deceived by CAN…As for food poisoning in Algeria, this isn't true, bunch of liars, the Egyptian coach assistant announced, only two people had it because of the Plane's food,so please stop saying nonsense, which violence are you talking about,Egypt is famous for provoking the other teams, ask the Ivory coast players, the Tunisian…etc, they sent supporters in civil air planes, what's wrong with that?everybody saw the stoned bus and the hurt players..We met you with roses and dates and you met us with stones???Nothing happened in Sudan, knives and all the nonsense, Sudanese gov stated everything was alright and the video shown in Egypt was taken from another sports event not even in Cairo or Sudan, so you can say whatever you like, the truth is here, Algeria deserved to be in SA, that's it, it's a young team, they'll learn from their mistakes, they 'll be in Sa whether you like it or not along with other African team you beat in CAN, cause they deserved it, that's it,
Hahah again i cracked up!
Nothing wrong in stopping before shooting the ball like Hosny Abd Rabou did! he happens to be smart! if he moves the ball then its a big mistake otherwise the penalty was perfectly right! and seriously? you convince yourself that the referee is courrpted because he did not send Chaouchi out? this makes no sense! and be fair! what happened in Sudan was crap? our bus's mirrors were broken as well! we are even. stop denying what happened in Sudan! Algerians confessed that some prisoners were out on this day!! WATCH videos proving Algerians with knives in the stadium. We were both wrong! we both didn't welcome eachother in a presentable way but never try hiding the bare truth or that you commit no mistake you are not angels! In case you have some difficulty in reading I said! Good luck to Algeria in the World Cup and I will support you because you represent Arabs. and Congratulations to Egypt for winning the 3rd African cup consecutively.
And by the way being a professional football player means that you have to be cold in the field and not lose your mind and headbutt the referee! if we are provoking then its an art.
For someone who is neither Egyptian nor Algerian it is very hard to understand how you two are cultivating and indulging in such hatred exchange and this since many many years.
Today Egypt ranks 10 and Algeria ranks 31 on the FIFA list. How can there be any discussion about what team is better?
The two should rather wonder, why they couldn't BOTH qualify for the WC. Why is it that a strong team like Egypt has to stay at home whilst second class teams from other African nations made it?
In Europe qualification tries to avoid such ambiguous outcome.
I can't help but thinking that FIFA wanted as many black teams as possible to underline the political impact of having the WC for the very first time in Africa. Obviously two white teams from Africa was unwanted, so FIFA made sure that one had to be eliminated in the qualification. In the end both are victims of FIFA's political strategy.
Well(cracked up again):) Yeah good luck for my country Algeria in the WC, i'm not gonna argue with you anymore,it obviously doesn't lead to anything, this is football, somtimes you win, sometimes you loose, that's it,we're all brothers at the end.
Peace

Sorry, but what a load of absolute nonsense.
The 'second class teams' you speak of performed better than Egypt and so rightfully take their place at the World Cup. End of story.
Biggest load of paranoid race-related rubbish I've read in a long time.
Jonathan
Algerians will always find an excuse for their losses and talk about something unrelated and speak of themselves as the victims.
First of all, Algeria lost 4-0 fair and square and you can't deny it. Stop blaming the referee for 'making' Egypt win. Algeria's coach also made up an excuse for their 3-0 loss to Malawi in the first round by saying 'the weather was too hot'. Right, as if the other teams in the tournament were playing in a different country. I swear, Algerians crack me up!! And if CAF was corrupted by Egypt, wouldn't we have qualified to the WC? They use the same referees after all. See how stupid your excuses are?
Now, yes Egyptians did stone Algeria's bus and did many more bad things. But so have Algerians. We are both to blame. Don't talk about Egypt and act like your people and country are angels. And another thing, Egyptian PLAYERS have never done anything violent. While Algerian PLAYERS blinded our medic in 1989, attacked our fans, kicked our players in a Olympic qualifier and tried to attack our players with the corner flag, and now played violently against Egyptian players in the 2010 African Cup, and oh yeah let's not forget head-butting the referee.
Why can't you accept defeat? Egyptians accepted our defeat in Sudan, now please do the same in Angola.
Yea yea. Algeria won by their petty crowd.
You have your own place in South Africa.
But, you aren’t stronger than Egypt. Remember that Algeria.
You do not deserve to have your place in South Africa. Why?
Take a look for what you did in the match. Your crowd break the bus windows and Your petty crowd was throwing players with stones.
You want a prove?
We have beat you 4-0 to prove that we are better than you. Whatever, I don’t care about red cards. You have did fouls, mistakes and you got your sanction.
But, hold it now. You are going to play football with America. There is a good security there. Players are going to play with no fear.
I bet that America is going to beat your ass. And That’s it.
If you have played with us a nice game without petty crowd, We would have cheer you. But, we don’t cheer WRESTLERS in football.
Same thing, Have a good losing against America.
In short sentence: “YOU CAN’T PLAY IN WORLD CUP AND WE ALL KNOW THAT”.
Egypt is going to cheer each goal you lose.
Good Luck America
Your crowd was holding knifes.
I’m not lying. Search for it.
There are videos about the crowd.
Before you talk about your players, You should have a look at your crowd.
You may say: “Huh Duh pfft? I don’t care about the crowd?”. Tell me this…
Can you run on thorns? It’s just like it. Players can’t play with fear.
They can’t give their best while Crazy people are throwing stones and holding knifes.
Yea yea. It’s not your fault. It’s your country fault.
Same thing, It’s FIFA fault. Why?
Sudan wasn’t a good place to play football if It haven’t any good security.
If there was a good security, I bet that both of teams could play a good game.
Algeria, You have appeared in the wrong time in the wrong place.
Fifa, You have make a wrong decision.
Egypt deserves to go that World cup. Now, It’s not going to have a good watching.
About the referee.
Yea the referee did a big fault.
Your goalkeeper (Wrestler Goalkeeper) Is attempting to hit the referee in his head by his head. I told you before: You are wrestlers…
Referee should have give your goalkeeper a red card immediately…
Referee just make his little eyes big, And this is not going to make anything right?
That’s the referee’s fault. Nothing else.
So don’t talk about your players again because, I know that you know that your players are just sweepers.
What you did is nothing to compare Algeria and Egypt.
All what you have did mean: “You have no victories.”
If you think that your players aren’t sweepers, Why don’t you show me your team skills?
Your team now is only going to put all players in your defense.
I’m sure that your players are wavering of America.
Why don’t you say the truth. You only talk about referee, cards.
Talk about your crowd. Talk about FIFA decisions.
We had a lot of videos that prove your crowd was under control.
And FIFA don’t give Egypt any regards.
Anyway, It’s just a game.
But, I only would like to explain what happened and Why did we lose in the match?
If we play a game, We should know the truth.
Try to be calm Algeria if you want to be strong like Egypt.
Egypt is doing what they can do. They aren’t holding knifes and making a war.
CALM DOWN
