How To Shimmy – A Short Story by Aaron Ramsey

It can often be that any youngster who just happens to play for Arsenal gets automatically over-hyped by the mainstream press almost purely because of the colours of the shirt they wear. I call it Aliadière syndrome. But that is not to say that Arsenal’s young players are not blessed with impressive levels of technical skill. As manager of the football club, Arsène Wenger demands it that way.

Either way, an outrageous piece of skill is an outrageous piece of skill, and such fleeting moments of magic deserve to be highlighted as and when they grace a football field. See, for example, Aaron Ramsey’s goal in Wales’ 3-0 friendly win over Scotland.

Wonderful. The way Ramsey dances around the ball so dizzies Steven McManus that eventually the Scottish international can take it no longer and falls to the ground perplexed. Look at the way Ramsey shapes his body for the shimmy. As the commentator points out, in going past his man Ramsey doesn’t even touch the ball, allowing instead his movement to baffle the opponent into meek submission. A relatively simple move but brilliant in it’s execution. There’s wizardry in them there’s hips.
