Leeds United vs Liverpool. It sounds like a Premier League game, does it not? It certainly does not feel like your average Premier League vs lower-league opposition cup tie. The last time Leeds United met Liverpool in the League Cup was back in the early 1970s when Leeds had Don Revie in charge and the two clubs were amongst the finest anywhere in Europe.

Nowadays things are slightly different. As if relegation from the top flight wasn’t bad enough, the sinking sands of financial instability dragged Leeds all the way down to League One. Playoff misdemeanours have since kept them there, so where the Whites expected their stay at that level to be but a brief sojourn they have been stuck impatiently in English football’s third tier for two and a half years now.

Tonight however, rather than hosting the likes of Yeovil, Hartlepool and Colchester United as they do during the regular season, Leeds play host to the football giants of Liverpool in a one-off cup tie. The game is expected to be a sellout, with at least 35,000 tickets rumoured to have been sold. The big games, the big atmospheres – this is where Leeds United belong, at least in the minds of their loyal supporters. Can you disagree with them?

The last time Leeds United beat Liverpool was in 2000 when Mark Viduka scored all four goals in a memorable 4-3 victory. The game was a top of the table clash between two teams chasing for honours at the very top of the English football tree. Tonight, Leeds take a trip back to a time not too long ago when they were a real force to be reckoned with. In great form down in League One, can they overcome a weakened Liverpool side and relive past glories?
