BREAKING – Roy Keane To Be Appointed New Ipswich Town Manager

23 Apr, 2009 Jonathan F England, Europe, Latest

He’s baaack…

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane is set for a return to football within the next 24 hours according to reports, as the new manager of Ipswich Town. Following the recent sacking of Jim Magilton at Portman Road, Ipswich are expected to move quickly to offer Keane the job, after the Irishman recently stated he would be open to managing in the Championship once again.

According to Ipswich Town’s chief executive Simon Clegg the club were ‘closing in on an appointment’ on Wednesday evening:

‘We are looking for someone with a proven track record who can deliver what everyone connected with the football club wants, promotion to the Premier League.‘ Roy Keane is that someone.

Keane has the track record the Tractor Boys are after having guided Sunderland to promotion in his first season in management. He also kept Sunderland in the Premier League at the first attempt, but walked out on the club earlier this season after his relationship with certain members of the boardroom broke down beyond repair.

Ipswich Town owner Marcus Evans is keen for Ipswich to gain promotion as quickly as possible having ploughed £44 million pounds worth of investment into the club, and will back Keane with millions to spend in the transfer market this summer. The Suffolk based outfit are out of the running to win promotion to the Premier League this season and this ultimately resulted in Jim Magilton’s sacking on Wednesday after three years in charge. His highest ever finish was eighth; not deemed good enough by the ambitious Evans, a multi-millionaire who made his fortune in corporate hospitality.

It is all change for Ipswich at the moment. New chief executive Simon Clegg, former British Olympic Association Chief Executive, was also appointed this week. The club are clearly looking to get their house in order at the top end before a major push for serious progress next season.

If Keane is appointed it will be a sad day in the life of Tony Cascarino’s credibility. ‘This is the end for him (Keane),‘ Cascarino crowed back in December 2008 after Keane left Sunderland. ‘He’ll not manage again. No one will give him the opportunity to manage a football club because they won’t trust him. That’s the bottom line.’

Don’t give up your day job Cascarino, whatever that is. Clairvoyancy is not for you.

What do you think of Roy Keane’s impending return? Ipswich fans, happy with this appointment? Let us know by leaving a comment.

  1. To be honest, Cascarino’s not much of a pundit! Good but brave move tho for Ipswich

  2. I really like Keano, the guy has got balls and has proven that he has the leadership skills (as a coach) to make a solid team; Ipswich goes up and does well in the EPL, then I think it would be safe to say that Keano could be a good Sir Alex replacement (how many of us are dieing to see him on the Man Utd bench again?!).

  3. @ Chris – haha you’re not wrong about Cascarino! Keane hit back at him in his first press conference as Ipswich boss:

“I would not give him the time of day. I am quite happy to comment on people’s opinion in football I respect, but Tony Cascarino is a man I certainly do not respect for a lot of reasons, and if I told you, you would be shocked. So the day I worry about Tony Cascarino will be a very sad day of my life.”

    Ouch!
